For Canadians, two of the most popular options are Fresh Prep and HelloFresh. If you are clueless about what to choose, read this Fresh Prep vs HelloFresh comparison and we’ll help you come up with the right decision.
Fresh Prep started in 2014 by childhood friends who were constantly battling to answer one question – what’s for dinner? Today, they are one of the leading meal kit providers in Greater Vancouver and Victoria. They operate as a subscription service. You sign-up, select recipes, and your orders will be delivered weekly. You can skip or cancel anytime, which is a good thing in terms of flexibility. They offer two plans – 2-person and Family, with an option for two to four recipes. The best thing is that delivery is free!
HelloFresh, on the other hand, is a bit older compared to Fresh Prep. The company was established in 2011 to provide everyone access to fresh ingredients and the knowledge to cook. HelloFresh is bigger than Fresh Prep as the company has a presence in 12 markets globally. In Canada, they deliver almost everywhere! It is also a subscription business model that provides automatic weekly deliveries. They offer three main plans – Pronto, Family, and Veggie with the option for two to four people and three to four recipes weekly.
Fresh Prep vs HelloFresh pricing
It is not always easy to compare prices between apples and oranges but in this case both companies have a family plan which are available for 3 and 4 weekly recipes. besides calculating the per serving cost we recommend to include the deliver fee if relevant to determine the total cost. Also, portion size may vary so make sure to also take that into consideration when you compare the prices between Fresh Prep and HelloFresh. Comparing the 4 People / 4 Recipes per week plans we can see that there is about 5$ difference in favor of HelloFresh. However once you add the $9.99 delivery fee the upper hand goes to Fresh Prep. Add to that the fact that first week has additional discount and for the 4/4 plan you can save with Fresh Prep. Compared to Fresh Prep, Hello Fresh offers a slightly better selection because they have three meal plans vs 2.
- 2-Person Meals: This plan comes with two servings, and you can choose from two, three, or four recipes. The price per serving is $12.25. Delivery is free regardless of the meal plan that you will choose.

I am a vegetarian and have been using FreshPrep for over a year now. The meals are amazing and portions are large. I am not sure where “Meal Kits Delivery.ca” has any place saying something negative about FreshPrep’s vegan/vegetarian options as there are at least five meal options weekly (and different each week). Never tried HelloFresh, but FreshPrep for Vegan/Vegetarian is amazing.
I also disagree with the view of Fresh Prep above. I was a regular meat eater…until I started Fresh Prep months ago. Their food is delicious, plentiful, nutritious, and great on the budget. Their vegetarian selection is excellent — often 40-50% of the meals on offer in a week and usually include recipes from around the world. We love it!
